Graduate Applied Music - Electric

Course Description: Private instruction for graduate students studying their principal applied area. May be repeated for a maximum of 8 credits. See Music Department for specific course requirements.
Pre-requisite: Graduate student music majors only, permission of Music Department
Objectives:
· Students will increase their technical and musical ability on the instrument
· Students will study appropriate repertoire and styles at an advanced level
· Students will become familiar with the role of the electric guitar in the context of various styles of music and various types of instrumentation
·
Students will study techniques of improvisation
in various styles
Course outline:
The student will meet with the instructor once per week at a mutually arranged time. Each lesson will include assignments and instructions for accomplishing the next lesson’s goal, as well as an evaluation of the previous assignment.
Course requirements:
The following standards must be met for applied students:

Students must attend all lessons, or give 24
hours notice of cancellation.
Cancelled lessons may be made up at the instructor’s discretion.

Studio class attendance is required for
degree-seeking students. Students
may miss studio class only for another FAU course, FAU performance or FAU
rehearsal.

Students must make practice of assigned
repertoire a priority, and must do it to the best of their abilities.

All students must perform at least once in studio
class. Students may also be
assigned to perform on recitals and/or concerts. All students preparing for recitals must
perform all literature in studio class during the semester of their recital.
· All students are assigned material based on their performance level. It is expected these materials will be demonstrated EVERY LESSON unless otherwise directed by the applied instructor.
· All applied students are expected to perform on a jury at the end of each semester of study. Music to be performed on juries will be assigned in a timely manner by the instructor.
Lesson credits (1 or 2) may vary.
Practice
expectations:
1 credit applied lessons (one hour lessons)
Students are expected to practice 2 hours daily, at least 6 days per week.
2 credit lessons (one hour lessons)
Students are expected to practice 3 hours daily, or a minimum of 18 hours per week
Evaluation
Preparedness for lessons – 25%
Attendance at lessons and studio classes – 25%
Performances at assigned studio classes, recitals and concert – 20%
Jury – 30%
93-100% = A, 90-02% = A-, 87-89%=B+, 83-87%=B, 80-82%=B-
77-79%=C+, 73-77%=C, 70-72%=C-, 67-69%=D+, 63-67%=D,
60-62%=D-, below 60%=F.
