The Language Requirement:
The student must demonstrate
proficiency of a language appropriate to his or her field of specialization.
Students can fulfill this requirement by completing a two-semester sequence in a
language at the undergraduate or graduate level, or a Reading for Research
course (e.g., FRE 5060, GER 5060, SPN 5060). Alternatively a student may
demonstrate proficiency in a language by examination as determined by the
department.
Rationale:
The Dorothy F. Schmidt College has abolished its college-level language requirement for MA programs within the College, in favor of department-level language requirements.

The Language Requirement:
The language requirement for the M.A. Degree in Communication can be fulfilled in any of the following ways:
1) Passing with a grade of C or better a two-semester introductory sequence in a foreign language;
2) Passing a graduate Reading for Research course taught by the Department of Languages and Linguistics;
3) Certification of competency in a foreign language by the Department of Languages and Linguistics.

The Language Requirement:
Graduate students in the English MA and MAT programs may fulfill the following language requirement in any one of the following ways.
1) Successfully completing a the two parts of an undergraduate intermediate-level sequence in the same language
2) successfully completing a “Reading for Research” graduate course, as offered by the Department of Languages and Linguistics at FAU
3) passing an approved test in the chosen foreign language
There is no language requirement for students in the English MFA program
