PROPOSAL

Revision of Language Requirement for MA, MAT, and MFA degrees,             Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

The Current Requirement:

...The Master of Arts and the Master of Arts in Teaching degrees require students to complete two semesters of the same language at the undergraduate level or complete

a graduate-level Reading for Research course (FRE/GER/SPN 5060) or demonstrate

proficiency.  American Sign Language is not an acceptable substitute.

The Revised Requirement:

Graduate students must meet the language requirement set by each department in the College for their graduate degree program.

Rationale: The current requirement places undue burden on the Department of Languages and Linguistics which is charged with certifying students’ foreign language proficiency.  The relevance of foreign language proficiency variables among the Masters programs offered in the College.
